CSAT fiasco - again
[ º» ¹® ]
The stressful season for college entrance exams has returned. It began, as usual, with the press running pictures of numerous mothers praying feverishly for the success of their children at Buddhist temples around the country - the familiar images, though obviously out-of-date, clearly manifesting the overpowering significance of college admission in this society. No doubt the mothers have done more than their best over the years so their children can enter reputable universities, which will ensure them prestigious human networks and chances through their adult lives.
A female student, probably over-conscious of the formidable sacrifices and expectations of her family, committed suicide in Ulsan, North Gyeongsang Province the day after she took the College Scholastic Ability Test (CSAT) last week. She was reportedly shocked by the media reports that predicted the average score would significantly rise over last year while her performance remained more or less the same. Some may blame her impatience. The Korean Institute of Curriculum Evaluation was to announce the average score for each district through sample scoring on the same day.
Sadly, the state agency responsible for writing and grading the test announced that the average score would slightly fall, not rise, after scoring 40,000 sample papers from across the country. The poor girl might not have felt the need to take her life had she known this result. What is even sadder is that she is not the first student who committed suicide for excessive distress over the college entrance examination in this country. Still, her death graphically speaks for the excruciating situations faced by hundreds of thousands of students as well as their parents and teachers every year.
The fluctuating degree of difficulty from one year to another has recently been accused as a major culprit for the annual ritual of ordeal and confusion. As much of society was paying zealous attention to the outcome of the test, the media made hasty predictions based on incorrect information collected from testees, teachers and cram schools. This is a highly risky undertaking and the risk can even be deadly when the test carries such overbearing significance for many students and their families - a virtual life-or-death event determining the future of our youngsters.
It is self-evident that our society should not maintain this ignominious state of affairs. The state must find ways to free our young generations from a notoriously inefficient education system focusing on a college entrance examination that often turns out to be a ruthless process of elimination rather than a test of the ability of individual students and thus a guide to matching them up with appropriate schools. Successive governments have revised the college admission system, but only to increase the chaos while contributing to the ever-deteriorating quality of education and the mounting expenses for private tutoring.
