한국 영화 DVD 세 편을 주문했다.

이 영화의 공통점은 한국의 전통 장례 모습과 그것을 둘러싼 여러 이야기들이 나온다는 점.
작풍성이 꽤 있다는 점.
해외 영화제에서 호평을 받은 영화란 것.
빨리 받아야 할 이유가 있어서 빠른 우편 주문으로 했다.
진작에 했었으면 좋았을 것이지만
주변에 누군가가 한국 비디오 가게에 가면 있다고 해서 몇 군데 돌다보니 늦었다.
그리고 영어 자막도 있어야 했고.....
그래서 DVD를 주문했다.
이참에 자세하게 볼 수 있어서 기쁘다.
DVD를 꾸준히 구매할 생각이다.
금주 세미나 프리젠테이션 시간에 "오구" 일부 장면을 볼 것이다.
친구들이 영화를 보고 난 느낌들을 어떻게 피드백 할 지 궁금하고 기대된다

Farewell, My Darling
When the patriarch of a large, extended Korean clan dies suddenly in a bicycle accident, his kin from far and near arrive for a few days of mourning, burial preparation and the funeral. It's a drawn-out process that exposes rifts and resentments among various family members. If that plot sounds a lot like Juzo Itami's skillful and delicate 1984 black comedy "The Funeral," it's because "Farewell My Darling" is virtually the same story, complete with the obligatory relative who wants to make sure proper custom is followed at all times. The problem with "Farewell My Darling" is that it coarsens all that was so wonderful about Itami's film. Its characterizations are one dimensional--audiences never learn anything about the relatives during the two hours of screen time--and Park's direction is crass. He moves the camera crazily but to little end, while the sensitivity and tact the film needs remain absent.
When old Mr. Park dies, his first son Chan-Wu, a film director, and his troublesome daughter Mi-Seon hurriedly come back to their rural hometown, and third son Chan-Se comes back to Korea from America. As the quiet country village gets busy preparing funeral, the house in mourning becomes a meeting place where villagers gather to ask how they are getting along and meet old friends. The children mourn their father's death and above all Mi-Seon, who caused her parents a lot of grief, can't stop crying. Chan-Wu, the chief mourner, has a revelation about his career, and Chan-Se prepares to sing hymns for the Confucian funeral service. Old Man Park's sister sells insurance products and gradually the funeral service becomes for the living rather then the dead.
Lee Jun-Seob, a renowned writer in his forties, hurriedly goes to his hometown as soon as he gets a message that his old mother who has suffered Altzheimer disease for more than 5 years passed away. The death of 87-year-old grand mother gives different feeling to various people. In particular his sister-in-law, who has taken care of her senile mother-in-law feels light-hearted and sorrow at the same time. In the mean time Jang Hye-Rim, a reporter who came here to write an article to review his literal world through his mother's death, is busy on covering this and that of funeral service as an observer.
Funeral service begins and the gap that arises from mother's death is getting deeper. As the service proceeds, however, Family troubles are solved slowly and Yong-Sun, who hates his uncle Jun-Seob due to his neglect of grand mother, sheds tears reading Jun-Seob's fairy tales. When the funeral service is over, each family members gets to keep the old grand mother's love and wisdom of life in his or her mind.
Angels of death arrive in the mortal world with a mission to escort an old lady to her final resting place. They are off to find the old lady Hwang, in the guise of human beings, dogs and flies. One of them appears in the dream of Hwang as her late husband and gives a sign of her upcoming death. After the dream, the old lady Hwang asks a shaman to perform KUT, the ritual services, so that her spirit can be sent to heaven after her death.. KUT has been banned in the village for years, since a daughter of the shaman got pregnant without marrying and was kicked out by villagers. Now the daughter, Mi-yeon, manages her life running a small bar in town living with her fatherless son, but returns to the village in years when the lady persuades the shaman into performing KUT. The shamanistic rite is in full blast and the villagers gather to watch and enjoy themselves. In the midst of it, all the hidden truth is revealed; Mi-yeon was raped and pregnant by some of the villagers, who expelled her charging her unmarried pregnancy; Yong-taek, the old lady's son killed himself by feeling guilty of not protecting his lover Mi-yeon. Through the KUT, however, their old grief, hatred and resentment are washed away. After the ritual, old lady dies peacefully. The angel, who returned to this world in the guise of Yong-taek under orders of King Ogu(i.e. King of heaven), feels compassion for Mi-yeon and wonders if he really was Yong-taek in his mortal life. Slowly he finds himself wanting to stay in the earthly world of human beings

The angels of death descend to earth to accompany old Hwang on her last journey. She decides to go to heaven with a shaman rite called Kut. The village organises the rite, which is also attended by Mi-yeon who was once driven out of the village because of being a single mother after being raped. Her fianc? committed suicide because he had no means of supporting her. One of the angels reincarnates to accompany the young woman and her child
in their lives.
Here is how to dedramatise death, the hereafter and reincarnation. A fresh comedy full of unexpected developments adapted from a tremendously popular play in Korea. This is Yoon-taek Lee's d?but as a film director after receiving an award for staging an immense number of theatre plays and dance shows.
